It depends on where you live, but most places make you wait until you're 18.

Why would you want to do something that painful?

I have known people who have had their tongue pierced and had infections. Your
Tongue could swell and even turn green if you choose to do that. Look it up on the web.

My cousin had it done at 19. She's now 22 and because she can't stop playing with it, she's worn off the enamel on her front teeth. It's cost her $1000's in dental bills, and the end is not yet in site.

She also has her ears pierced and her belly button. Out of all those she said the tongue was the worst.

There's also a stigma attached with tongue piercings. It's not a very flattering one either, but I can't mention it to a 13 year old.

Where I live the legal age is 18. I echo the sentiment of the others - why would you want this?

I once had a high school girl, age 16, who came into our home to help with our youngest son. She wanted the piercing and her bf's Mom went with her and signed permission. That was against the law right there.

When she got hom her parents noticed it and told her that since she thought she was so adult enough to get that piercing, she can pay for any complications.

The piercing got infected, so much so she had to have surgery as the stud would not come out of the tongue. Took a long time to heal.

Whatever look you want to achieve with this, is not worth the risk of complications.

Read what Bluesong and the rest of us have written, your health is more important than a tongue piercing.

I do agree with Fr. Chuck on the parent's permission - but in that instance, it was not the girl's parent who gave permission - but her best friend's mom. The salon owner did not verify who was who.

IP was given an answer: the age of majority wherever he/she is. In most states that would be 18.

If the minor's parent or guardian gives permission prior to the date at which the minor becomes an adult, that person would be exposing him/herself to liablility, in my opinion.
