Is my electric heater a heat pump?
    Hi,

Oh wise ones, two questions for you.

I just got a quote for a new electric AC/Heater unit. The sales guy told me that I have a heat pump unit. I thought this was just a standard, turn on the unit and, coils light up red and heat up air and, send it through the house. I replaced one of the heat coil units myself. It is all electric, no natural gas.

How do I tell if I have a heat pump unit. I do not seem to have the two different fans... that I have read about.

And, I am now thinking of adding natural gas to get better heating in the winter. This unit takes too long to heat the house, way too long. Are there any electric units that can heat efficiently?

    Thanks so much!

I prefer gas models myself as they don't tend to faulter in low temps. They heat nice and they heat fairly quickly. You can have a heat pump unit but the coils are there for when the outside temps drop below 32 degrees. That is when the efficiency drops off and then the coils can take over to provide heat and make your meter spin like a top.
