    Why does gmail ask for a mobile number
    I don't even have a mobile or home phone number to verify the registration

    They never asked for that when I registered. There's NO WAY I would give a place like my phone number. They may have asked for a secondary email account, I don't recall.

    Yes they ask for the mobile number for the confirmation. While registration there will be a field "alternate email" if you left this field blank. Sure they will ask for the mobile number. If you give any email address in that field they won't ask for the mobile number... thanks...
