Credit cards are mini loans. You present your card to purchase good or services. The merchant then sends the transaction to the credit card issuer who credits the merchant's account with the amount of the purchase (less a transaction fee). The credit card issuer then sends you a monthly bill showing the amount you have charged to the card. You then have the option to pay the bill in full (without interest charges) or pay over time (with interest).

You use cards in place of carrying a lot of cash and so you can make larger purchases immediately. You need to manage these purchases carefully because the balan ces and interest can build up if you aren't careful.
