    How to remove old metal windows in a cinder block wall
    This is a metal window that opens one side with a crank handle and it is encased in cinder block with veneer brick on the outside. I need to replace this window with a double sided glass aluminum window. How do I remove it ? And what type of relacement window ? Thanks

    The metal frame is a part of the window and set into a mortar pad/sides/topped.

    The removal is in the 'rough' side of things,it takes some effort to remove,and care not to damage the outside mortar(some will have to come out for the new window,namely if it is chamfered at the bottom,for water run off.)

    Using a sawzall with a metal blade,long enough to reach the full width of the metal frame while resting the base on the inside wall for steady cutting,cut the sides or the top and bottom,your choice.

    Making the cuts in the middle of the frames will allow for the removal with the least amount of effort.Pry the frame from the mortar,while wearing gloves,grabbing the metal and pulling loose the pieces, it doesn't always come easily.

    The new window should be just shy of the actual opening.Having a sales person from any lumber yard or window source would be prudent(it makes them responsible for any measurements,if it's wrong,they have to make it right)

    Make sure if you are going to put in a vinyl window that you have insulation for the expanding header and base/sides.Shims for installation,and you will need to have something to screw the new window to.namely a wood frame.If possible,frame the opening before you order any window.the better the frame,the better the life of the window.(treated base,typical pine framing for the sides and top are ok)

    I am assuming this is a basement window,but am I wrong?
