Hard water line sputters - soft water line does not
Neighbor came over asking for help. They have soft water throughout the house and hard water to the outside spigots. I stood on their basement steps and watched as he turned on a spigot in the basement hooked to the soft water line and then he went outside and turned on a hose attached to the hard water outside line. The water in the basement never sputtered, but the hose sputtered for several minutes. The water was left running both places for several minutes after the sputtering stopped. There is a check valve inside the house before the water softener.

I checked your site and found a similar question about excessive water and told him, but he's thinking it has to be something else since the inside doesn't sputter.

Can you think of anything beside a faulty check valve in the well or a leak in the water supply pipe attached to the well pump?
