Caught by cvs store security shop
Hello I don't know if you could help answer my question but if you could it would be greatly appreciated. I live in newyork, newyork and 6 years ago I was caught by cvs store security shop lefting.no police were involed. I was banned from all cvs's and told if I were ever to enter another cvs store I would be arrested. The security officer asked for my i.d. which I gave him. He took down my name ,address,DOB and had me sign some papers. I asked him if this would appear on my background check he said "no"... now I am about to undergo a background check with the nyc department of corrections! I want to be a correction officer so bad and I hate that this has ever happened and if I could turn back the hands of time I would do it all over DIFFERENT! I am worried now. And I'm wondering if something like this will show up in a back ground check? I was never arrested, police were never called, I never had to appear in court I wasn't issued a fine or anything. When the security officer took down my info was that just for cvs files? I pray this doesn't jepoardize my future in the law enforcement field...

First no since the police was not invovled it will not be on your record.

BUT, most likely part of the process with a "polygraph" and one of the questions may be have you ever stole anything.

Also to be frank, a minor issue will not stop you from being a correctional officer ( should not) and you want it to be known, the last thing you want is for one of the inmates to find out, they will then try and blackmail you, think after 8 years of working, he says, if you don't bring him some smokes he will tell about your stealing. So you bring him some packs of smoke, well he now has that to blackmail you also. And he wants more and more.

I had to sadly handcuff several officers in my day, for bringing in everything from a gun to cell phone to whiskey for inmates, and they all started the same way, a small crime that would not have cost anyone a job if they had admitted it, but they hide it, an inmate finds out and it goes down hill from there.

It won't show up in your background check but as Chuck pointed out it will come out during any polygraph you take. And just why would you want to voluntarily be in jail along with all the "real" criminals in the first place? If it's the pay, forget it as you will literally earn every penny of your salary every day and the good possibility of you being really burnt out by all the inmates in a short amount of time. If you really want this then go for it but be aware that it's not just as easy as sitting at a desk reading a book all day. It's more like 99% of the time utter boredom and head counts and 1% of sheer terror as a very aggressive inmate decides to carve up your face with a homemade shiv.
