If montessori adheres to the NCTM (National Council of Teaching Mathematics-I think) standards I can help you. The NCTM is designed to basically keep up with other nations in mathematics. They recognize that all children learn differently and children should learn all methods to a) find one that works for them and b) be able to understand and explain what multiplication means in practical terms. You or your child can explain for example, that 8x6=48, which is 8+8+8 and so on for six times. It wasn't until I started teaching it the NCTM way, that I truly got the concept. Also, base of 10 makes a lot of sense for many children. So, you say 62x7= and it would take me a sec w/out paper and I would tell you it was 420+14 which equals 434 because I'm using base ten... that just means multiplying the tens first and adding the ones. Seriously, I HATED math as a kid and now I LOVE it as a teacher and my students do too. It's way more fun because you are PLAYING with numbers instead of rolling out some boring formula that has no MEANING! (Caps are intentional!) Happy math-ing!
