    What should I ask for??
    I'm located in the state of Virginia and I'm going to court for child support. What should I ask for, (ie) child care, health insurance, life insurance, college fund, etc. Or do I just go in there submitt my financial information and see what the court mandates. Also, if the father does not show up for the hearing would that delay the proceedings and any support needed?

    Do you have an attorney to fight for you? If not, I suggest you get one so that you get all of your child's needs met properly.

    Are you just going for support is is this part of a divorce? In most states you don't "ask" for specifics, the amount of support is determined by formula. Its only when negotiated as part of a divorce can you ask for specific things.

    There is no divorce. Just a relationship. Tried to work out support through the years but the father would always default and not give any support for over 12 months. So I finally filed 3 months ago to get this situation behind me.

    The Court will award you by Statute based on income - you don't need to "ask" for anything. The paperwork you filled out should list all your options - child care, health care, etc.

    The father could get an adjournment. If he does not and he does not show up in NY (where I am) a subpoena is issued and he is forced to attend the hearing with his financial records.

    Then support will be ordered according to the formulas in effect. You should be able to Google VA Child Support formula to find specifics.

    On a side note, the first time he defaulted on an agreed support payment you should have hauled him into court.

    Thank you for the info. I have accessed the VA support site.
    And I agree that I should have done it sooner. I know any interaction with him would have ended and I wasn't ready for that. I know that is completely foolish and I should have put my child's needs ahead of my own. Moving forward I am putting her needs first and I want this all behind me.
