How long can you keep fresh caught trout in the refrigerator
Hi a neighbor gave me 6 trout on Tuesday that he had caught... all cleaned. It is now Friday and they are still in the refrigerator. Are they okay to eat? Thanks

2 rules I use. Nothing over 3 days old. And what does it smell like. If it still smells fresh and you can only eat one of them then you might consider cooking all 3 and refrigerate the rest you didn't eat for no more then 3 days. Also with fish if your going to freeze them fill the bag ( like ziplok) with enough water to cover the fish then freeze. It will taste much better when you thaw it out to cook it.

I have never heard of that:confused: So it's better to fill with water and then freeze? I usually wrap in freezer paper , then plasic wrap and then freeze.

We keep a lot of fish here at our house. My wife and I have always fished, and now that we have two boys to help us, they add up. I agree with califdad. We always submerge our fish in water before freezing them. In either a freezer bag, or in milk jugs with the tops cut off. It works good.

As far as the trout, if they still smell fresh, they should be OK.
The ones at the market are probably older than yours.

Thanks everyone. We decided not to use as there was some confusion as to what day the fish were actually caught... better safe than sorry... probably would have been okay, but did not want to chance with the holiday week-end ;)

yeah, I only heard of milk soaking. Never freezing in a solution. Interesting. Makes sense. Prob. Keep the oder down in the box itself too.
