I read this futuristic series of books in about mid 90's (at school - bear this in mind when thinking the about the content - ie: no sex scenes etc).

I was told it was by a canadian author, and there were three books.

I remember it being about a young native man, and an ape like slave that was thought to be dead, and shoved out of the castle with the trash.

Looking back, it seemed to be a forresty world, and it was "futuristic" from the point of view of being written in the first half of the 20th Century. Still talked about Castles and Citadels, but had what we'd think was pale "technology" by today's sci fi.

I'm sure one had the title like "the citadel". However "The Citadel of the Autarch" doesn't seem to be the one, and Gene Wolfe was a dead end.
(before you ask, no - it isn't planet of the apes!)
