    Sump pump
We have a regularly use full bathroom in the basement that uses a sump pump to remove waste water. For the last 5 years, it has ran fine after every flush and shower use. Recently, for the last two months, (problem 1) the power of the sump pump doesn't sound like it use to, sounds like it is struggling to pump water. (problem 2) it is taking longer to pump water than usually. (problem 3) sounds like there are rocks in the sump pump when it is removing the water. The container is sealed and I'm not sure how to open it. Please help, thank you.

That is not a sump pump even thpough it looks similar to one. You have an ejector pump in an ejector pit. It is sealed to keep the sewer gas out of your basement, kniow this before you think of breaking the seal. Ejectors are grinders and thaey will eventually go bad. You never know what folks or kids throw into your toilet so rocks, nuts, bolts, marbles, dice ( I am naming the things I have found in peoples home) checkers, toy soldiers, coins, etc... can all sound like rocks as would a failed grinfder. Any idea of how old it is?

The "ejector pump" is ten years old. How much should I pay for someone to come and check? And how should I pay for repairs or replacement, if necessary.

The pump can be bought at most box stores and plumbing supply houses, expexct to pay $225 for the pump, if you need one. You can call 3 plumbers and ask them what they charge to come out to check you ejector and ask if any of that charge would be applied to a replacement if you need one. A completely new pump and labor/call would run between $400and $500 depending on the going rate in your area, remember to ask all 3 for bids but do not take the low bid if he is extremely low compared to the other two.

You are going to pay a lot more than 4 to 500 for a sewage ejector replacement. The company I work for is in the 6 to 700 range. That does include a new check valve as well.

One of the best Sewer Ejector pumps on market is 2" - Zoeller 267. It has cast iron body and is designed specifically for pumping sewer. It costs about $250.00.

As far as the cost goes, I agree with previous posts. Expect to pay at least $500 for labor + any additional parts.

Sewer ejectors should be serviced every year or two. That includes cleaning the pit.
