Can my psychiatrist force me to be committed against my will?
Can my psychiatrist force me to be committed against my will? If I told him how depress I am and that I'm on the verge of committing suicide.

They work with you to do what is right for your needs, that doesn't mean you will be committed right off the bat.

What are you going through that you think you might need to be inpatient?

I have BPD & have committed myself a few years ago. I happen to have an appointment with him today. Last I wrote my suicide notes all out & got everything ready to do it. I didn't know if I told him this will he have me committed?

A psychiatrist can arrange for involuntary commitment for up to 72 hr. based on the standard of "danger to self or others." While this standard is applicable in most states, how it is interpreted varies substantially from state to state.

Any period beyond 72 hrs. requires a court order.

Note: This is seldom done. The standards are tightly interpreted and the danger must be "obvious and imminent". i.e. a violent offender delivered to an emergency room under restraint and incoherent. Expressions of past suicidal thoughts, and even attempt suicides aren't generally dealt with in this manner. It is up to the patient in almost all circumstances. Most psychiatrists and mental health workers in private practice never commit against the express desire of the patient.

I don't know if he can commit you or not, but even if he can, you still need to be open and honest with the psychiatrist in order to get the help you need.

Don't hold back - tell him/her exactly how you feel and your intentions. It's the only way for them to know what you're going through.

    Good luck!

They will never do anything that serious unless it is a very very serious case. Can they, yes they can, for a evaluation.

But if you are not honest and tell them everything they can never help you either.

Merely having feelings of killing yourself, is honestly not enough to be committed, I couseled someone this week that felt that way. Now if you have tried several times, that may be different
