Is it safe to take a prenatal vitamin that has herbal ingredients?
I just ordered New Chapter Perfect Prenatals and I see that they have many herbal as well as probiotic ingredients. Is this safe during pregnancy?

It depends what the herbal ingredients are. However, that's a reputable company, and anything that's sold as a Prenatal, by definition, should be safe during pregnancy.

Ask your caregiver to be on the safe side.

To be on the safe side, if it doesn't say anything about USP quality, I wouldn't take it. USP means it has been tested for safety and effectiveness. As a pharmacist, I haven't heard of any herbal ingredients necessary to take during pregnancy.

Thank you for your answers! Here is what I'm wondering. I've heard that most vitamins are synthetic and therefore not great for you since they aren't from food sources. This is what lead me to organic vitamins. They are quoted as "Class 1" herbs... does that mean anything? I wish I knew more about this stuff!
It also says "We at New Chapter provide you an organic probiotic alternative to isolated or USP vitamins and minderals." Does that mean anything to you guys... because it's like another language to me!
I'm trying to obtain the best prenatal vitamin. This is so tough! Can you answer any of these questions... or do you have any supplement suggestions? Thank you so much! :)

I would recommend asking your OB or midwife. Suppliments beyond prenatals shouldn't be necessary unless you have a deficiency. Prenatals have many benefits, perhaps the most important are iron and folic acid.
