Ginger root has long been known as a good remedy for acid reflux. It can now be bought in capsule form, and one taken after dinner. Apple cider vinegar mixed with water (l tsp in l/2 glass of water) and drank while eating dinner.

Ginger has had some recorded benefits in users many let "ginger ale" go flat before drinking it so that CO2 is released and does add bloating to stomach discomfort. Also think of using digestive enzymes when you eat your last meal of the day, do not lay down just after eating, raising the head of bed to levels you can tolerate and drinking water with meals because water is essential to digestion. Remember, ginger is a treatment (after the fact) the others are preventions.

If you got it real nasty and you are looking for a quick fix, baking soda will do the trick. Mix a teaspoon with a glass of water and you got heartburn relief. It comes with belching and an awful taste, but it works.

-Prop up the legs of your bed 3-12 inches so that your head is higher than your feet.

-Avoid clothes that are tight around the chest and abdomen such as a tight elastic waist band, tight belt, or tight bra. If you are in doubt, try switching to looser clothing for several days and see if you feel any relief. Some web sites say this only applies if you are obese, but anyone can be affected by tight clothes.

    -Eat small meals.

-Eat early in the evening and do not lie down until several hours after you eat. An after dinner walk is a good idea.

-Avoid foods and drugs that relax the sphincter (a ring of muscle) at the top of the stomach, including tobacco, alcohol, anxiety drugs such as valium; antihistamines (eg benadryl); antipsychotics; antidepressants; and muscle relaxants. There are many drugs that relax the sphincter muscle and promote GERD.

Good luck! My GERD is MUCH better since I started paying attention to these factors.

Proton pump inhibitors like prilosec are great for short term treatment. But I wouldn't describe them as a home remedy and I personally would not take them daily. Once you start taking them all the time, you get heartburn as soon as you stop. This is sometimes called "rebound."

Like all drugs, they have adverse affects, some of which we know about and many of which we don't.
