Does this "water hammer " occur when it's filling or when it stops?
Is this the only fixture this happens to? Back to you, Tom

If I flush without any waste material in the toilet, no noise occurs. However, if I put toilet paper or other waste in the toilet bowl, a second or so after flushing, I hear a loud water hammer sound that seems to be coming from the basement.

This isn't water hammer. Water hammer occurs in the pressurized water pipes. Yours occurs when the discharge hits the bottom of the stack. Did this just start or has it been ongoing? Let me know, Tom

OK! Here's what I think's happening. You flush a upstairs john. The discharge, including the soilds, picks up speed dropping down the stack until it hits the bend at the base. What it hits down there is anybodies guess but it's banging into something.
If you have a clean out in the basement on the stack snake from, there. Otherwise snake from the roof vent. Put out enough snake to reach the base and 20 feet more to get out in the house main. This may be some sort of design flaw and nothing can be done but snaking the line is a start. Good luck, Tom

Hello, I just remodeled 2 bathroom and of course bought brand new toilet. One on 2nd floor, other one in basement. Both of them makes rattle noise as soon as I flush them... Could it be the same reason as "jameelsx"? Look forward to hear from you.

Noise when flushing toilet and when running water
[ 1 Answers ]
I have humming noise (seems to be getting louder) when I flush the toilet and when I run water into the bath and into the kitchen sink. I read a reply to a similar problem about looking at the regulator.. What is a regulator?
Many thanks!
