    Old debt collection-credit denied
    Hi,
About 20 years ago I let a major charge card go delinquent. I never paid it. Since then my credit has improved, I've owned a home and have excellent credit. I recently started working for a company and was denied a company charge card due to the outstanding debt that I have from 20 years ago.

This hasn't been on my credit report in several years.

My question is twofold - 1) will they put this on my credit report now, since I contacted them to find out why I was denied?

    2) Can they still try to collect on this? I'm not dealing with a debt collection agency but the charge card company itself.

The irony is that I was given a charge card years ago at another company I worked for. They didn't deny me then.

    Thanks

BY LAW, debts are required to drop off your credit report after SEVEN years, much less 20.

Contact the credits agencies and ask WHY is that debt still on your credit report. I suspect it probably is NOT on the credit report(s), but rather in a data bank at that particular credit card company.

As for collecting the debt, they CANNOT legally collect a debt that old!

I get to disagree with Atlanta Tax Expert, never did that before.

Depending on where you live but they can not take you to court to get a judgement, but they may attempt to collect a debt though their own collections or a collection agency forever if they wish.

It is only after the Statue of Limitation that they can not longer use the courts to force you to pay.

Thanks but I know that the debt has NOT appeared on my credit report in several years. So I guess I shouldn't be concerned about that. It also doesn't sound like they can re add the debt to my credit report.

But it might be that they can continue to contact me about the debt if they are NOT a collection agency but the card issuer themselves. But that they cannot use legal means to collect the debt.

    Thanks for the help.
