Should I hire my mom to work with me?
My mom has just recently lost her job and was aware that we may have an opening here at my office. My mother and I have a great relationship, but have always been told to not mix business with family. She does have a very strong personality, as does the other girl with whom she would be working with. I do worry this will ruin our relationship and I just don't want our job to come between us and wreck the relationship that we have. Its only a 3 person office and we are very close nit here, but is working with my mother a good idea? Should I hire her or not? I NEED HELP!

All other things being equal, I would not. Apart from anything else, it sounds like you would be your mother's superior at work, which is bound to cause problems. If she gets into rows with the other girl, would you be able to settle it impartially? What if she doesn't work out, and you have to fire her?

You be willing to give her orders? Would she be willing to take them? It's doubtful. The parent-child relationship precludes the boss-employee relationship and would make things awkward and tense in the office.

Is this a company that you personally own? If not tell her there is a nepotism rule on the books and she is not eligible for hire there.

If you do own it, then tell her you don't want to set a dangerous precedent.

It's hard for parents to understand why you wouldn't want to help them out this way. As far as they're concerned, they did everything they could to help you in every way possible for 18 years of your life. It's hard to understand why you wouldn't want to do the same for them.
