Looking for some insight as to how to turn off the water at my second
Home in Marathon Texas (6 hours away from me now).

There is a water meter out there, but no "apparant" shut-off valve. There are no plumbers in the town, none worth a penny anyway. I'm positive that the water can be shut off somehow near the meter.

So my questions are 1) is it likely I can turn the water off at the meter itself somehow? 2) Or is it more likely there is a buried valve near the meter? 3) Is it likely to be 1" pipe?

I need to get the water shut off so I can install a new water heater and make other upgrades. The guy that works for the water board there is totally worthless. He does not return phone calls, or show up and do what he says he will when he does answer the phone or return a call.

I have no recourse other than to tackle the chore myself. I'll go dig the thing up and figure it out when I get out there, but I need to formulate a plan ahead of time so I can be prepared to deal with it.

As a rule water companys install a lever type shut off on the street side of a water meter. This is so they can service or change the meter without shutting down the entire block. There should also be a house shut off located where the water service enters your house. Good luck, Tom

Got to love this old house. You were correct about the corporation stop. Old style with a keyed lever and very fragile. That was the only valve between my old house and the street. I have someone taking care of that now and then I'll be on my way until the next roadblock!
