1040NR q.: ever changed visa type? Definition of 'change'
    Hello,

I am not sure how to answer question F (page2) on 1040NR-EZ for my 2009 federal tax return.

-have you ever changed your visa type (nonimmigrant status)?

I am a German citizen. I was in the U.S. as J1 research scholar until June 2008. My J1 visa expired in June 2008. Back in Germany, I applied for a new visa. F1 this time. I returned to the U.S. in January 2009 and held this F1 visa since then.

I am confused because I don't understand if 'change of visa type' refers to (a) any person who obtains a new visa after having held a different (expired) visa at any point in their life time. Or (b) if 'change of visa type' refers to an application to change visa type when the current visa is still valid and the individual remains in the country during the change of visa type.

It appears to me that I meet only criterion (a) but not (b). Which one is meant in the form?

    Thanks for your help!

    Update:

I have the same question for form 8843, Part1 b. My current nonimmigrant status is F1 but do I have to give a date of change here because of my previous J-1?

Question E you put F1. So answer to F is No.
