How to file with self in AZ and wife in NYC?
    Hi,

I started with turbotax but got confused when I started with state taxes.

I'm full time resident of AZ and my wife moved to NYC for work (she didn't work in AZ) on 9th June. So, she is legally a resident of NYC and part time resident of AZ.

However, a friend told me that for filing taxes as "Married filing jointly", I need to report her as a resident of AZ and non-resident of NYC.

I don't have any income in NYC and she doesn't have any income in AZ.

How should I file taxes as MFJ?

    Thanks

Can someone comment on whether I need to file my wife as a resident of AZ or NY?

You will file jointly in BOTH states.

On your Arizona reurn, you file as a full-year resident and she files as a part-year resident. Her NY state income is reported, but is NOT taxed.

On her NY state return, you file as a non-resident and she files as a part-year resident for BOTH NY state and NY City. Your AZ income is reported, but not taxed.

The reason all income is reported is because that determines the rate of taxation; the higher the overall income, the higher the tax rate.
