    Submersible pump problem
Our submersible well pump runs, but sometimes we have water and sometimes we don't. We can do 3-4 loads of laundry and do dishes, etc. and have plenty of water. Then after not using water overnight or during the day, when we're gone to work, the pump runs, but we don't have water. This happens sporadically, lately once to twice a week. We've changed the pump 3-4 times in the last several years, we've checked the valves and shaft and they're all right. We've had to add air to the pressure tank occasionally, then when the water comes out, it's rusty colored and takes a couple of days for it to clear. What could be the cause of all this?

What kind of tank do you have, bladder or pressure?

How do you know the pump is running when you do not have water?

Why do you have to keep adding air to the tank?

    How deep is your well?
