I'm trying to find a book that I have read in the past but cannot remember the title or author.

It is a murder thriller, set in a small town in the USA

The plot revolves around the local chief of police investigating a series of brutal murders of citizens that have dark secrets of illegal activities (both mild and serious).

Throughout the book, the perpertrator is known only as "The Man", and each time the reader is lead to a particular suspect, that character is invariably murdered in the next chapter.

The conclusion of the story is finally that the villain is the police chief's schizophrenic other personality.

I read a 2nd hand paperback copy in about 1999, so the publishing date must precede that by a few years.

It was a great read, and I hope there will be someone, familiar with the plot, that can identify the Author and Title for me.
