I have JUST finished painted all the cabinets in the kitchen and are replacing the range hood which is under a set of cabinets. Unfortunately, the cabinets are made of Formica and once the old hood was removed we found that the bottom of the cabinet was wet and falling out. Evidently rain has entered through the vent.

Is there any way to repair this without removing the entire cabinet from the wall? I thought I was done!

Measure the width and dpeth of the cabinet. Cut a piece of 1/4" luan to fit (it's only 3/16 thick). Make it a tight fit. If you have a center stile, you may have to make the new bottom on two pieces. Make sure that it fits and you can get it in. Spray with several coats of laquer. Put a bead of silicone around the perimeter of the cabinet bottom. Put new bottom in and press in place.

Luan is a cheap (relatively speaking) plywood available at Home Depot, Lowe's and other lumber supply. It comes in different thickness but is most often used as a covering for floors or other things where a new surface is desired. Not a bad looking wood. It is actually a made from mahogany. One surface is sanded relatively smooth and is ideal for this application. It is sold as 1/4 thick but after sanding it is only about 3/16", again ideal for your use. You will have to buy a full 4' by 8' sheet but it's in the $10 price range.

I came across this in a search engine and made an account. This is very useful information since my under cabinet is doing the same and making the cabinet doors lopsided. Can I use the luan for the front of the cabinet as well.
