I am installing in-floor radiant heat in 3 out of 4 floors of our home, each floor on its own zone. We have the house gutted, so we can run the pex under the floor joists easily. My question is, for the basement we want to use the old (100 years old) cast iron radiators as opposed to in-slab. The basemement will be on its own zone as well, is it possible to combine the use of the radiators with the in-floor system? We will be using a gas fired water heater to provide the heat and domestic hot water.

I have radiant heat in my bathrooms(2) and kitchen,each on their own zone.

I have radiators in rest of house including basement. Also on their own zones(4).

It all works fine together. Nice walking on tile floor that is warm.

Don't know about using water heater for hot water and heat. Maybe someone else here can answer that for u.

Certainly is no issue combining the radiant with the radiators... done all the time and works great!

What concerns me is the combined 4 floors of radiation on a single water heater.

Tell me, Just how big is the water heater you are planning to install? It's going to have to be pretty darn large... ;) Sure, water heaters can be used for heat zones, but this is usually reserved for single floor applications like in a cape house.

Finally, you are planning on having two water heaters... right? You can't combine domestic water with water for heating.
