Had settled for lessor amount with creditors now receive letter from IRS stating need to file 1099-c because settling for lesser amount means I made profit, and now owe $900.00 What the heck?:eek: Can this be so? And if yes what could be time frame to file the 1099-c . Thank you;

I have a friend who received a 1099 with an amount in nonemployee compensation. The money was received as part of a lawsuit settlement where she suffered physical sickness due to mistreatment by a nursing home employee. This does not seem right to me that she was given the 1099 at all.
