My dog george is a lab cross rott,he will be 17 in June,he is fighting fit and goes for a run every day,he started shaking his head a few weeks ago and I was advised by pet shop to put some drops in to soften wax.he was a little hard of hearing before but since I put these drops in he seems tone deaf.he gets very upset when going to the vets so I want to use this as last resort! Any advice?

How did the people at the pet shop know that they were treating a wax build up ? I would never consider taking the advice of a pet shop owner over my dog's vet. Whether your dog gets upset about a vet's visit, you should take him in. He has lasted for l7 years, he deserves the best.

I agree, if it was something more serious, then what you put in his ears could actually be more detrimental then anything. That is a slim chance, but if it's not wax build up and in fact an ear infection, what you have given him will be no help at all. And now because more time has passed this infection could have caused him to go deaf. It could be temporary or life long.
I know dogs don't like going to the vet, but you can try to make it moe of a positive experience by giving extra love while he is in there, as soon as he walks through the door give hima treat and a "good boy", keep treating when the vet touches him give him a treat when he is just sitting there being good, keep him distracted by extra pets and scratches. I know at my vet, when we walk in the door, Lady is treated like a Queen, ALL the techs and reception come out and greet her, give her treats, pet her, give her lots of nice words. (they do this for every dog, but it makes me and her feel so good) The Vet's are the same way. Lady actually likes going in there now!

Hi tickle,thanks for your reply,yes I have been going to this pet shop for years,it's a family run business and have great experience.I would never put georges health or well being at risk! He is my baby! He has had wax build up before and it was the same this time with the head shaking.I have spoken to my vet and she knows what george is like and knows that I have asked the shops advice before and to date has not been wrong.I have made an appointment for this evening and spoken to my vet.I know he deserves the best and always has and always will do.will keep you all posted.:)
