I have had an issue that's similar to some here... over the past 2 weeks or so, I've noticed that the temperature in my house drops into the low 60's (I usually keep the thermostat between 65 (night/away) and 70 (home)) and the furnace kicks on and seems to continually run, then kick off for 60sec and resume running. There is heat coming from the vents, but with no real force. Then it will work fine the next day for a couple days then repeat this cycle.
The thermostat itself seems to be fine and I have removed and cleaned the filter. The problem is intermittent at this point.

Because I am NOT a handy-with-appliances chick, I called in a tech today who thoroughly looked it over and told me the motor is failing. He said something about "too much amprage"...
Could this be possible, or am I getting crapped on? And what could this cost me...

It is very hard for me to say one way or the other because I am not there to check the motor or any of the other parts.

Plus I am not sure if your post is talking about the blower or the burners that are shutting off and back on.

It sounds like this is not a real big problem at the moment so is it possible that you could wait and see what happens to the motor.

About the amperage. A motor is built to run and as it is running the amprege will read a certain amount say 3.8 amps. This motor should run at this same amps unless something changes, opening the door on the furnace will raise the amps a little, if the motor is just starting to run it will jump up high and then settle back in just a few seconds.

There is another part that might cause these same symptoms, and that is the high limit switch. The way it works is if your furnace gets too hot it will turn the burners off for a few minutes and then come back on.

Actually when it shuts down, the whole furnace shuts down, burners then blowers for about 60 sec, then blowers start back up and then the burners come back on.

When he calls today about the motor I will ask about the high limit switch and the flame sensor (unless they are the same and I will seem like a dummy... LOL)

My biggest issue is that this is a rental home, so I don't want to leave my tenant dealing with the ups and downs... if it was me I'd throw a sweater on :)

If the airflow seems weak and the blower amperage is high, the diagnosis of a failing motor is likely accurate. If the motor cannot maintain proper speed/airflow, the furnace may overheat & cause the erratic cycling you describe.
