I have a 2004 GE fridge with a freezer on the bottom. About a month ago the fridge stopped working and the repair guy came out and ended up melting the ice that had frozen in the freezer and stopped the fan from running to cool the fridge.

I have since done this twice myself. It has now died again. I'm sure it's frozen. What is my next step to a permanent resolution, since I'm not a fan of dismantling the fridge to get at the fan and sitting with a hair dryer for an hour every two weeks.

Is there a decent fix for this issue?

More than likely your defroster mechanism has failed resulting in the excess of ice build up.

There are only 3 reasons a defroster fails:

1. Defrost heater faulty.
2. Defrost limit switch faulty.
3. Defrost timer faulty.

If you know how to test these components with a multi tester, test them and see which component is bad and replace the bad one.

If you don't know how to test or don't have a multi tester, call a repair person and have it properly fixed as it won't get magically better on it's own otherwise. And don't call the moron who just defrosted the ice the first time. He obviously did not properly test anything and just handed you a huge bill for nothing but hair dryer repair which is no repair at all. I would contact that company and demand that they send someone else out who does know how to repair and properly test refrigerators!! That guy obviously didn't know what to test or what to fix!
