How to file for refund of ssn and medicare taxes f-1 opt
    Hello,
I am a F-1 student on OPT and my SSN and Medicare taxes were withheld by the employer. I asked the employer for a refund but they said they are unable to do so and gave me a letter to submit to the IRS. I am planing to file for federal return using 1040 NR and claim for a refund by filing form 843 and 8316 and other supporting documents. Is there any other thing which I need to do.

I would like to understand how good are the chances of getting the medicare and ssn taxes refunded because many CPA's are telling me that it will be a waste of time to file for a refund.
I would also like to know what should I fill out in option 6 in form 843 which states
    -706
    -709-
    -940
    -941
    -943
    -945
    -990-pf
    -1040
    -1120
    -4720
    -other (Specify)

    Really appreciate your help

First file your tax return Form 1040NR with Form 883. Wait for about 2 months.
Then file Form 843. It must be filed separately after your return has been processed. For option 6 check other (specify) and enter 1040NR. Your U.S. Tax Return: Social Security and Medicare (FICA) Taxes for Non-resident Exempt Individual
