Part Time Resident? NonResident? Resident? What!
I lived in Ny for the whole year of '08. In April '09 I moved back home. I want to claim myself as a resident in HI. (Born and raised) But I didn't work for the rest of the year in '09.
I'm doing my own taxes and prefer not to walk into HR Block atm, but am considering it now because I'm all confused.
Now two confusing questions that I'm trying to unravel. Sorry if this is a bothersome question...

    1) Do I file my NY status as NonResident and Hawaii as Resident?
(Not planning to move back to NY any time soon.)
    2) If I didn't work in HI for the rest of '09 do I have to pay for anything?

You are part year resident of NY.
If you did not have any income after April 09, you need not file Hawaii tax return.
