    Honda Accord shifting issues
    :( I have a 1997 Honda Accord, and just recently I have been having issues trying to shift, when I put my car into " Park " I can't get it out with out using the gear release ? Can anyone give me some help on what could be causing this ? Could the transmission be going out on the vehicle ?

    What is the gear release? Are you pushing down on the brake pedal for 5 seconds, before shifting out of Park?

    The best way to prevent the huge, unexpected transmission repair bill is to change the fluid, preferably with a full-synthetic ATF, and change the filter every 30,000 miles.

    Right nest to the shifter there is a release button, I push it down, place the car in neutral, and the start the car, I place the car in drive or reverse and the car works fine, until I put the car in Park

    It could be something as simple as the transmission shift (P-R-N-D-L) linkage is out of adjustment.

    Other than that, does the transmission up and down-shift OK?

    A repair manual is priceless for that car. Tons of info on transmission quirks.

    Yes it's the gear release, and yes I do push down for more the 5 sec before putting in gear, what I have been doing is before starting the car use the gear release put the car in reverse and away I go, I have no other problems with the vehicle, its been shifting a bit rough, but I think that is because I don't let it warm up first, once I am on the road it works fine.

    Did you ever find out what was causing your problem? My wife's 03 Accord did the same thing this morning. I am trying to figure out how to fix the problem with out breaking my pathetic checking account! Thanks for the help.

    :D no.. Im afraid of what the cost will be also so I have been dealing with it. IT SUCKS though, you have to put the car in nutrual first, and then start the car. Let me know what you find out too, that will help me make my final this on what I want to do.

    I think he's right it is probably the linkage out of adjustment sending the wrong signals to the car.

    Well, the older automatic Accords have some issue with the shifter cables not functioning properly. Weither it's a seizing issue, a wear problem, a weak retainer bracket, or an adjustment issue I'm not sure.

    When the car is running in park and you hit the break peddle, do you hear the shifter release solenoid fire? It should click audibly. Even if you hear it click, it may not be fully desengaging the shifter lock.
