Baltimore md... about what should I be paying to up grade tp 150 or 200 amp service? I have 100 amp now with a lot of doubles. The box is so croweed. I d like a 30 panel box... thank you... richard

I am from New England, my guess for your area will be approximately $1000-$2000, but this will depend on several other variables, such as lenghts of wire and conduits, types of materials used, etc.

Best to contact at least three local electrical contractors, have them all bid the same scope of work and materials, and be sure they all include electrical permitting and inspections, and carry all the proper insurances.

If you change the main breaker box are there any upstream changes required? Like in plumbing, if you change part of drain, other joining components must be brought up to code.

Good question, usually, if the exisitng home is not too old or in bad shape, the inspector only looks at the new service. But if he finds Knob & tubing , or some other old or faulty wiring in the basement, he may request that be repaired or up graded.

Usually, the inspector is not going to, and has no vaild reason to have the entire home upgraded, unless there will be renovations.

I paid $1200 in northern New Jersey and went from 100 to 200 amp.

Finding an electrican was the problem.

Im doing the same thing... going from a full 100amp to a 200... the 100amp is small though... would it still cost as much even though there aren't that many circuits going into it? I do have existing knob&tube wiring in the house which will be changed as the renovations go but I wanted to start at the panel and work my way up. The house does have upgraded circuits for the window AC units but that's about it.

I do not know much about electrical costs, there seems to be allot of work changing the wires on the outside to bring in the additional service.

I recently had some work done--- I have a subpanel running from my 200 amp service ( I have moved from where I had the upgrade done) to another box with 100 amp service. And I had the electrican redo the box ( 1oo amps) to give me more circuits and it cost about $500.

Call a few people again just to get someone to come over is a problem. I called 6 guys and two responded.

I upgrade my house from 60 amp to two hundred amp service. I found an electrician who would work with me. I drove the ground rod, I bought the panel and breakers and set it up on the outside wall and the electrician wired the new panel from the old (inside panel) and coordianted with the power company. Total cost approx. $450.00 This of course was two years ago and I HELPED!
