What is your current feeding and exercise plan?

Just a good quiality kibble and daily walks should be enough to lose weight. For a Pom perhaps 2 half hour walks morning and night.
You can buy special kibble for overweight dogs but I am unsure of brands available in the US so you would have to shop around (unless anyone else can give suggestions)

I am pretty sure that for commercial brands Iams is also sold in the U.S, that, in my opinion, is one of the better quality commercial dog food brands. They do have a formula for weight management. But the best way to help her drop the pounds, will be excersice as Shaz suggested. The walks are a great start, but it's doesn't have to stop there. You can play catch, oh and for really over weight animals, swimming is one of the best. It's easy on the joints, and burns lots of calories. Try not to feed directly before or after excersicing.

What has his/her vet said? Is the pup under any restrictions? Is she/he overweight from too much food/treats or a medical condition coupled with lack of exercise?

Along with the previously given advice: If she/he doesn't have any health issues other than being overweight, feed her a good quality food and use part of it for training/treating, cut back/stop other types of treats. Make him/her work for her 'treats'. No table scraps.

If you take him/her swimming, get him/her a dog swim aid.

I did a lot of research on dog diets.. I have a Pit/Rott mix that was overweight. What I did for her was found a food that is high protein and low fat. A lot of the diet foods that are made for dogs aren't worth anything. It leaves the dogs hungry and constantly looking for more.

What I put my pit/rot mix on was by Natura Innova Evo Weight Management. Its got 52% protein and 15% fat... I took what I was feeding her, which is a cup and a half twice a day, and decreased by 1/4.. Feed that amount for two weeks and then weigh again... If there is no weight loss, decrease again.. If your dog looses even a pound, you're going in the right direction.

If you do go shopping for diet food for dogs, remember, lots of protein and no fat. I do believe that commercial brands of food such as Eukanuba, Iams and Nutro are very, very low in protein.

I would suggest, instead of going to a pet store like Petsmart or Petco, go to the "mom and pop" pet stores that carry the more holistic foods. They'll be able to point you in the right direction...

Also, before putting your dog on a diet, it's a good thing to get the thyroid checked. It's a simple test and doesn't cost too much.

    Good luck!
