I have a 2004 ford expedition one day it just didn't want to start so I bought a battery that wasn't the problem so then I thouhgt it was the starter and that wasn't the problem either so then I called a mobile mechanic over and he could not figure it out either he told me I just have to take it to the dealership but I know they charge a lot so I'm wondering if anyone can help with any advise, thanks salina

How many miles are on the plugs? If the speedometer was acting weird, be sure to check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes. It may indicate a problem with the Variable Speed Sensor (VSS).

Basically, if you, or someone else, can perform the tests in the link above, you should be able to zero-in on exactly what is wrong.

Yes, I would definitely replace the spark plugs, especially if you don't know if the original owner ever replaced them. However, they may or may not be the principle reason your car is not starting. It's very important that you hook a code reader up to the under dash data link connector, turn the ignition switch to ON, and check for any codes.

Thank you. Many of the tests in the link you may be able to do yourself; e.g. checking fuses with a test light and borrowing a code reader to check for codes. I would do those basic tests, before getting someone to install new spark plugs. When you do change the plugs, only use the same Motorcraft plug number that is in the car now. Also, call around on the phone and get the best price you can--it makes a difference.

If the starter motor cranks, but the engine won't start, replacing the plugs may be all it needs. This is more likely if the Check Engine Light never came on and there were no other trouble signs. Try getting the best deal you can on the plugs yourself and getting someone to only charge you labor for installing them. A 106,000 miles is a lot of miles on spark plugs. The spark may be so weak that the vehicle just won't start. Explorers are very reliable.

Once you get it running, start using full-synthetic engine oil (e.g. Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum). Change the oil and filter, then, every 6,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Likewise, be sure to change the transmission fluid and filter every 30,000, as Ford recommends. If you take care of the engine and transmission, Explorers can go 250,000 miles or more.
