    Replace shower diverter valve.
I installed a new valve and tightened the bonnet nut but water still flows from faucet and shower head. Water doesn't seem to be coming from around stem. Is it a defective diverter valve? It is brand new.

Read your post twice and still can't figure out what your issue is. Water should flow from faucet and shower head like you say. Water should not flow from around the stemlike you said, so what is wrong?

When the shower is on, water should not flow from the faucet and shower head at the same time.

A previous answer to a similar question on this site stated that this problem usually occurs when the bonnet nut is too loose. Indicated by leaking from around the valve stem. Mine was not.

The answer to my problem was that there are two o-rings one was missing.

    Thanks for your time.

Found the answer. There are two black o-ring washers. The new replacement o-ring had fallen off in the package (I thought it was extra) and the one from the old valve had come off during extraction and lodged in the shower wall access hole. Works perfectly!
