Basement bathroom ejector pump runs periodically without any flushing taking place
My basement bathroom ejector pump seems to run on its own without any flushing taking place. It only empties the bathroom toilet and the sink.. it does not appear to have any leaks that I detect.

Hi Rontay...
First thing I would check is to see if your basement toilet is leaking water past the flapper. To check this, take 10-15 drops of a dark food coloring and drip it into the water of the toilet TANK only. Wait a few hours and see if the colored water shows up in the toilet BOWL... if so, then it's safe to think that the water is slowly dripping past the flapper and filling the ejector pit to the point that it engages the pump. Here, at a minimum, you would need to replace the flapper... at a maximum, the entire flush valve assembly would need to be replaced. Otherwise, it could be that the ejector pit has developed a leak in the liner and is letting water slowly fill the pit to the point that it sets the float switch on and causes the pump to turn on. You would need to take a few measurements over time of the water in the pit by removing the electrical wire rubber seal and then determine if that is the case. If extra water isn't the issue then the float switch must be defective and you may be able to replace the float or float switch... may need to replace the entire pump... *UGH*! That's about all I can think of... MARK |
