How to break a lease in South Carolina
Ok, here is my deal... I signed a 6 month lease with my roommate who works for my landlord. I was offered a job in another city and told my landlord over a month before I moved out that I had to move. She told me to find someone to take my place and everything would be fine. So I did. I found tons of people who wanted to move in, buy my roommate did not like any of them. I am now in my new city and my landlord told me that I never talked to him and that I am not allowed to sublease. Is a verbal agreement binding? Or did I have to be in writing? What will happen If I don't pay for rent after January? The kicker is that our place was rented through a rental agency, and our landlord lied to them and said that we were related to them so he would not have to pay commission... Could I use this to get out of my lease? Thoughts...

You can tell the landlord that, if he will not let you out of the lease, you will inform the rental agency that he lied about your relationship. However, he might feel paying the commission is better then letting you out of the rent.

If you weren't able to find a satisfactory replacement tenant, you owe until the end of the lease.

If you stop paying rent your roommate will be responsible for the entire rent and could sue you for it. You signed a lease, what does it say about subleasing.

First merely moving is not a reason to break a lease normally, so you will basically still owe for the full lease up to when they rent it. In most places they are required to try and rent it.
