Heat Pump Iced Over But Running
My heat pump outsidde is iced over with about 2 inches of ice inside and out. It continues to run so far. My furnace is still kicking on like normal but on our thermastadt it show it runs sometimes in EMRG. Is it safe for my furnace to continue to run like this. We have a digital thermostadt. I have a work order called in today with our home warranty people and hopefully they come out tomorrow.

It might be a smart idea to turn off the power to the outside unit. There is usually a disconnect close to the unit outside that will turn it off. This way you will eliminate any possible further damage to the unit since if it freezes over enough to have ice stop the fan then fan motor damage could happen.
