I'm going to buy two replacement 13 SEER R-22 heatpumps - outside and air handlers. The Trane is $1800 more ($900 x two) and gives me a 10 yr warranty on the compressor vs. 5 yr on the Goodman - all else is the same. Is the Trane with its extra 5 yrs worth it?

Goodaman A/c's are OK. Trane is also good. Rheem/Ruud will also come with a 10 yr. warranty and be price in between the two.

They all are just about the same. Ask about ten years parts and labor on the system you buy. Well worth it- one service call will pay for it. Buy the highest SEER unit you can afford with a extended warranty.

I for got to say- go with a 410A system instead of R22. R22 is in a phase out, it will only cost you more money in the long run.

Some say the phase out will begin in 2012 and I've heard others say 2020. I prefer R-22 for a variety of reasons, there is also rumors of another refrigerant to come.

First of the year goodman now offers 10 year warranty on all the products standard, ps you can generally 10 yr labor cheap too. I am a goodman dealer

I've been in the business for 18 years and I'm sorry there is no comparison from trane to goodman they are not even close, TRANE is by far superior to goodman, goodman buildes there equipment to minimum epa standards, Trane far exceeds that, don't take my word for it do your research, consumer reporting agency rates American Standard #1 in the industry American Standard corp. is the manufacture of Trane. They are very durable, have great customer support, and don't under estimate that extra 5 years warranty they don't offer that for nothing. Goodman only offers 5 years for a reason, THINK ABOUT IT!!
To say it as polite as I can Goodman is a generic model, Trane is a well known name brand with the reputation to back it up! It's like comparing apples to oranges!
Look at the condenser coil to start with tranes is the most efficiant out there.
Some will say they are to hard to keep clean but a true pro will have no problem just take care of your preventitive maintenance!!
YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!

Goodman offers 10 year warranty like Trane. Goodman has gotten better but is still far from Trane quality. Trane builds their own compressors while Goodman now uses Copeland. I unfortunately put in a Goodman the other day and it rattled right from the start, the access panel didn't fit nice, and their was hardly enough room for the service valves with hoses attatched. You can see right through the coil like a screen, but it does the job. Builders cheapunit. Trane is far superior with a great rep. They are superior to all other brands. FYI, a Trane compressor that has been running non stop for 27 years IN A BRICK OF ICE just stopped working this year.

Where I live and probably everywhere else goodman also gives a 10 year warranty on compressor,, check it out and ask questions, sometimes the contractors just want to push the higher priced units

Maybe someone could explain with the heat a/any compressor puts off how it is going to stay inside a brick of ice while it is running,, that would be a trick ever superman couldn`t match

York-Coleman and Rheem-Ruud-Weatherking plants are already set-up for R410a and not producing R22 units. I personally would go with a Rheem or Trane R410a system. When the unit is installed make sure all new copper lines are installed, nitrogen placed through the lines while brazing and charging of the units is done by the superheat. Failure of equipment is mainly due to failure of knowledge by the installer. You also may want to look into the high SEER unit with the rebates the federal government is offering.

I am the owner of a 4th generation family owned HVAC company. We have been installing Trane since it was originally General Electric. If you go to consumer reports you can see the test results for all brand comparisons. It may cost you a few bucks to sign up, but will be money well spent against the knowledge you will gain regarding your investment. Trane/American Standard (Both now owned by Ingersol-Rand) are superior products. American Standard being the "builders model" and Trane the "homeowners model". As hvactulsa stated above, Trane makes their own compressors, and also have the patent on aluminum/aluminum "spine fin" technology. Most other brands use plate fin, which is copper tubing and aluminum fins (much like baseboard heating elements). Unlike most brands, due to its design, spine-fin has a much greater life expectancy than any other brand, as it is not suspect to galvanic or crevice corrosion. The only other information I can offer in this regard is this, we have to stock Goodman parts as we are a "we service all brands" company, but because of our service history with Goodman we prefer not to sell/install it. To put this as politely as I can, "We service Goodman, but we install Trane"

This post is so full of vendors, the site owners should all be getting free air conditioners.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is the company you are buying it from, how they install it and will they be in business 10 years from now, to do any of that service or warranty work.
