    It is one which depends on something in an equation. For example, in F=ke (Hook's Law in elasticity), e is a dependent variable which depends on F.

    In physics, F is a force, e and extension and k a constant.
    You can vary the force F by using different weighs, and e will vary depending on the value of F.
