Single and adopting with bipolar disorder
I am 34 (f) single, diagnosed with bipolar 15 years ago and been on disability for 5 years. I have heard of those that have adopted who are bipolar with a doctors recommendation stating suitability and stability... but I do not know the specifics of what is considered stable for adoption purposes (and suspect this would vary from agency to agency). I do not know if my disability status paired with my single status would make things impossible here in the u.s. but I have always loved kids, and have a much love to give. If anyone has been successful in a similar situation or knows anyone who has, please contact me with more information.

    Spriteyone,

It's never a good idea to piggyback your question onto a thread that is 5 years old.

I've moved your question/information to its own thread so that you get more pertinent answers.

As a birthmother, I suspect that your bipolar disorder is less of an issue than your single status. Most birthmothers figure that if they want their child raised by a single parent, they'd just do it themselves.

My suggestion is to contact adoption agencies in your area and find out what their standards are for adoptive parents. Please remember that while some of their standards are those set by law--other standards are because that is what birthparents are looking for, for their children. With fewer and fewer women choosing adoption, and infertility on the rise--birthparents have a LOT more to say about who gets their child than you think.

If it truly is a matter of just loving children and NOT a matter of wanting an infant--look to your local foster care agencies and find out what you need to do to qualify.
