Can someone claim loss rent when they sold the property
I had a six month lease agreement. I broke it after I found out my mother had cancer and needed me back home. After six months I get served, and my old landlord is suing for loss rent, but I found out that the property was sold, during my lease terms. Can he still sue for loss rent?

    Hello tanya:

Anybody can sue anybody for anything... That doesn't mean he'll win. Go to court, and tell the judge what you told us here... It would help too, if you have PROOF.

First things first: what state is this in? State laws vary on what's legal and what's not.

How far into the lease did you break it? How much notice did you give your landlord of your intent to vacate?

Did you notify your landlord that you were moving or did you simply move out? Did he make reasonable efforts to re-rent the property during the remainder of your lease?

How long after you moved did he sell the property? How much rent is he suing you for? Did he ever return your security deposit?
