Hi,

I am renovating a shower and have a drain question.

The old shower had an antique lead shower pan/liner thing. I got as much of it out as possible. If you look in the attached picture, you can see the frayed edges of what is left. It seems to be permanently affixed to the actual drain.

The question is, do I attempt to take this drain out and replace it with a newer one, as in the other picture? If yes, how do I get the old drain out of that black PVC pipe that you can see level with the subfloor? Isn't that drain actually in the PVC? How do you get the drain out so that I can put the new one in?

Or, do I just leave the old drain in place since there really wasn't anything malfunctioning about it? Obviously, I'd have to clean up the frayed edges from the old lead shower pan/liner though...

If you can remove the bolts holding the top part of the flange type shower drain you can use the old drain for the new installation. Let me know if it cdan be removed and we'll go from there. Good luck, Tom

There are no bolts, screws, or anything like that. It just seems to be all crammed together.

What should be down there is a carbon copy of the PVC flange that's shown. What's on top of the lead that's left and what's under it? Canthe drain be unscrewed? Regards, Tom
