    Walking shower plumbing
The house that I bought had a whirlpool tub and I am wanting to build a walk in shower.
The tub is removed and there is a hole in the conrete slab with 1 1/2" pipe sticking out.
I am assumming that there is a 1 1/2" P trap underneath. Is this a safe assumption and can I tie into the 1 1/2" and run a 2" shower drain or do I need to dig up the P trap and replace with 2".

    Thanks

    Hi Toolman...

If you can find a shower/shower pan that lines up anywhere near to the old whirlpool tub drain then, although not "code legal" you can certainly connect the new shower drain by reducing the 2" shower strainer to 1.5" and connecting to the 1.5" pipe/ptrap. I'm sure it would drain just fine.

That being said, if the new shower drain doesn't line up with the old whirlpool drain line, then you are going to have to break up some concrete and repipe the drain and most likely will find a 2" pipe under ground (code mandates 2" drain pipe underground). In this case, you would remove the 1.5" pipe and trap, and locate new 2" pipe/PTRAP to the new location and now all is even up to code.

Determine the shower/shower pan you plan on using... see how it all lines up. Let us know what you find...

PS: They do make a 5' shower pan that swaps out for a 5' tub EXACTLY (shower drain on same end as tub drain). What size is your whirlpool?
