    International Divorce Query
I am an American married to an English Citizen. We separated in April 2007 and in June 2008 I moved back to the United States, intent on filing for divorce once I'd gotten settled (with the economy being the way it has been, and with my emotional state, this has taken a while). My husband refuses to pay for the divorce in any capacity as he did not want to separate but is pressuring me to get the matter settled and over with. This is fine except I have no clue where to start and am on very limited funds at the moment. My question is: does an inexpensive, quick divorce exist with an international marriage? Is this something that I can file myself? We were married in the United States (Marietta, Georgia - Cobb County) and there are no children or assets between us. Thanking you kindly for your help...

You would file in the jurisdiction where you currently reside. Assuming that you've lived in the same locality since returning to the US in June, 2008, that shouldn't be a problem since it's been over a year. The real issue will be serving your husband with the complaint since he's overseas. You should consult with a local divorce attorney about that matter. If you can get him served properly and he doesn't respond, then you can be granted a divorce by default. And I'd assume that he wouldn't respond and allow it to proceed by default, since he's pressuring you to get it "settled and over with."

I have been at the same address since returning home and I can see him not responding. This helps me tremendously and I feel a little more comfortable with some basic knowledge of how it could work. It also gives me something to take to an attorney and start with. Thank you very much for the information!

There is no "international marriage" you merely file for divorce in Cobb County. He will be served notice of the hearing.

If there are minor children and custody issues, here will be more to it,

But Cobb County will handle it.

*** and a howdy neighbor I live in Cobb County myself and often hang out at the courthouse
