How does the system credit jail time served towards sentence imposed?
I have a friend who was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 3 years in probation. He was in jail for 122 days (counted normally- calendar days) since he was arrested until he was sentenced). Is it true that a day in jail = 12 hours? How does the system credit those days he was in jail towards the sentence ?

One day in jail equals one day in jail - who told you one day in jail equals 12 hours? They are incorrect.

The system "credits" him for ANY days spent in jail up to the time of his sentencing.

    Hello r:

There is NO system. The judge MIGHT give him credit for time served, and he MIGHT not. There is no requirement that he do so.

Twink is right. A day, is a day. He MIGHT earn some time off for good behavior, but the rate at which he earns it isn't standard.
