I live in Ontario, Canada. 4 years ago I left my old building with only 1 months notice as apposed to 2 due to a cockroach problem. I was fully paid up, but they wanted money for advertisement, administration fees and having an empty apartment for 3 days. I have been sent notices from a credit company about paying these above mentioned fees. They have threatened to take me to small claims court. 4 Years have come and gone and I keep getting these letters/emails/phone calls. How many years can they threaten/harrass me with this? I have explained to them on many occasions why I will not pay and have said lets settle this.

Frustrated with the threats.

What I know is that every time you acknowledge the debt, the time starts to run afresh.
If you desire to close this matter once and for all consult an attorney where you live.
If NOT do not acknowledge anything on the matter.

Yes and no. It depends on what is meant by acknowledge. If you begin making payments on it then that restarts the clock for the statute of limitations. Check your state's statue of limitations and it will tell you all about it. If it is bothering you and you can pay it in full do that. If not write the company a letter and offer them a settlement amount, and start with a small percentage of what you actually owe. You want to do your best to stay out of court. If you cannot pay anything, and you have no choice but to go to court don't hire a lawyer, nine times out of ten if it is within the statute of limitations you will lose, and you will have to pay what you owe plus attorney's fees.
