    Is this true in DC
I am a resident of District of Columbia and I received a letter from my Leasing Office stating that they are going to sue me because I didn't pay my rent THis month yet. I inquired about the letter to the property manager and she states that by DC law rent is due on the 5th, (which I know) if not paid by the 5th they can file by the 10th and sue on the 16th of the same month. I do not owe any other months rent just this month and did tell them that they will get the rent before the month is out. I am not sure about this but what kills me about the situation is that I WORK for them. I'm there building engineer who lives onsite. I don't plan on losing my job so I do plan on paying rent. This does not make sense to me. I never even received a copy of my lease that I signed .

    Hello c:

It's not DC law, it's contract law. And, it's worse than you think... If the lease doesn't say otherwise, they can file a lawsuit at 12:01 AM one day after rent was due.

If it were me, though, I'd be looking for another place to live and work. Who wants to associate with THESE jerks?

I'd ask 'em for a copy of the lease.

No one needs to notify you in advance that they can sue you. The saying goes, anybody can sue anybody for anything. So now you are at least 16 days late with your rent, why haven't you paid them yet, they will win if you go to court so cut to the chase. What wouldhaving a copy of the lease do for you in this case, you are in violation of your lease.
