Why does my child vomit during the night?
For the last month or so my 1 year old son has been going through these vomiting spells that only occur in the late night and early morning. It is like he is not digesting his food. He wakes up and starts coughing after crying and vomits excesseive amounts. I didn't know his lttle belly could hold so much. He almost chokes on it. Sometimes in early morning he will do the same thing when he wakes up. I am very concerned about this. No one really knows what is going on. I consulted a doctor and she said it was a stomach virus but I am sure that it does not last months. His vomit is actually the whole food he had ate early in the day. I am not sure that he is chewing. Please help me if you can

I can only guess, but to me it sounds like an esophageal hernia. It's not serious, but from the symptoms you described, it's a possibility.

What tests did the doctor do? Did they do x-rays, blood work? Anything?

Does your son have a fever that would lead the doctor to diagnose a stomach virus?

When was the last time you went to the doctor about this?

Obviously this isn't a virus, especially if it's been going of for months and only occurs at night and in the mornings.

Nor am I certain that it's an esophageal hernia. As I said, that's just a guess, based on the fact that I have the same problem and that's my diagnosis.

Having said that, you really do need to get to the bottom of this, and the only way to do that is to revisit your doctor or to get a second opinion. Don't let it go. Make sure they do tests, find out what's going on.

Sorry, I wish we could give you a definite answer, but no one can via the internet, without tests or a medical degree.

Doctor, it really is your best bet.

Let us know how it goes.

Wow, I have been looking online all morning about my daughter having the same problem. She is 9 and for the last week has been waking up vomiting. It is almost always undigested food from dinner the night before. I am an RN and have been doing Med/surg for 12 years. Im very familiar with GI problems, but this had me stumped. She has a tummy ache when she wakes up and said that she thought she was hungry and then the vomiting would happen so fast she can't make it to the bathroom. By mid morning she is fine. I just don't get it. To make matters worse, we just moved from Florida to Texas 2 weeks ago so I do not have a doctor here.

I'm no doctor nor do I have kids, but my toddler cousin had this same problem, throwing up at night, it turned out she had Celiac disease. She stopped eating gluten and that fixed the problem.
